Wicked Nights by Gena Showalter5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() She'd like to say he was the first medical professional to violate her confidence. ![]() Humiliation still burned hot and deep, a fire in her blood. Out there in the real world, a stunner like you would make me work for something as simple as a dinner date. But last night he had sedated her with the express purpose of stripping her, touching her in ways he shouldn't and taking pictures. Well, he'd drugged her every day of his two-month employment at the Moffat County Institution for the Criminally Insane. She would never willingly do anything to please him. How that smugness grated-not that she'd ever let him know. The longer she stared at him, silent, the more his lips curled upward. At five ten, he was only a bit taller than her, on the thin side and, if you ignored the blackness of his soul, moderately attractive. In his early forties, the doctor had thinning salt and pepper hair, dark brown eyes and perfectly tanned, though slightly lined, skin. Fitzherbert, though the other patients in the "trust circle" remained in her periphery. "How does that make you feel, Annabelle?" The male voice lingered over the word "feel," adding a disgusting layer of sleaze.Īnnabelle tilted her head to the side, her gaze locked on Dr. ![]()

Were the two World Wars historical accidents or were they the undertakings of powerful yet undocumented cabals for the creation and expansion of the Soviet Union? Was the Soviet Union the ultimate successor to European colonial empires? What role did the alliance with Germany play in the implosion of the Ottoman Empire? Why were so many soldiers sacrificed at Gallipoli? Why did Germany avoid invading the newly formed Soviet State? Why did the Nazis avoid a ground invasion of Britain? What happened at Dunkirk and Dieppe? Who was Fritz Kraemer? How did Germany end up with one half under the Soviets and the other half under Nato? Why were atom bombs dropped on Japan even though bombing raids had brought greater destruction to Japanese cities? Was a bipolar New World Order, dominated exclusively by Nato and the Soviet Union, a strategy for controlling the populations of the world? Incorporating more than two hundred sources, the World War Deception comes up with some unlikely answers to these original questions. Most interesting, for me, the novel extends the possibilities of the common Science Fiction trope of the artificial human. ![]() But McEwen’s past reads more like a contemporary history than Science Fiction, with allusions to Brexit (a common subject in contemporary novels, including Ben Elton’s Identity Crisis, Ali Smith’s Seasonal Quartet and Sam Byers’s Perfidious Albion to name only three) and the current problems Western countries now face concerning identity. Now, society faces its next step into futurity: artificial humans and all their attendant promise and dread. McEwen’s alternate past is technically more advanced than our present: not only are there mobile phones, but self-driving cars have become the norm. McEwen offers an alternate history of the 1980s, centred around London during a period of social and political upheaval. Yet, unlike many Science Fiction books and films that deal with this subject – Blade Runner, 2312 and I, Robot for instance - Machines Like Me is set in the past rather than the future. One aspect of the novel deals with the implications of artificial humans and artificial intelligence, placing it firmly within the Science Fiction genre. Machines Like Me is something of a change from other Ian McEwen novels I have read. ![]() The Outlaw Ocean by Ian Urbina5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Traffickers and smugglers, pirates and mercenaries, wreck thieves and repo men, vigilante conservationists and elusive poachers, seabound abortion-providers, clandestine oil-dumpers, shackled slaves and cast-adrift stowaways: drawing on five years of perilous and intrepid reporting, often hundreds of miles from shore, Urbina introduces us to the inhabitants of this hidden world and their risk-fraught lives. But perhaps the wildest, and least understood, are the world’s oceans: too big to police, and under no clear international authority, these immense regions of treacherous water play host to the unbridled extremes of human behaviour and activity. ![]() There are few remaining frontiers on our planet. ![]() The Outlaw Ocean is a riveting, adrenalin-fuelled tour of a vast, lawless and rampantly criminal world that few have ever seen: the high seas. ![]() I Am Legend by Richard Matheson5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() It really captures the emotion and turmoil. ![]() I love both the films and the book, but the book has my top vote. I enjoyed them, it's nice to see how Matheson develops his skills through his short works. The short stories are a bonus and I don't think it's fair to mark down because of them. Yuri was also great, and I almost didn't carry on because of the reviews but I'm glad I did. The complaints against his voice I can't fathom. Robertson Dean's performance is incredible - he's great at covering Matheson and I was excited to see his name. Matheson does an amazing job at putting us into the story, as always. Yes the character is deeply flawed, but in light of circumstances it's understandable. it's different to the films, and stands alone as an incredible and realistic story. I'm really surprised to see so many complaints in the reviews, I feel it's a case of misguided expectations. ![]() Nvivo coding qualitative research5/21/2023 ![]() In the New Node dialog box, enter a name and description (optional).Select the unit of text you want to code in the source item, then drag and drop it into List View, over the prompt “Drag selection here to code to a new node” Researchers often use data-analysis software for analyzing large amounts of qualitative data.If you are taking an inductive approach to coding, you attach codes to units of data as you analyse your files.
