Alcatraz evil librarians series5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() But any adult who has enjoyed Sanderson other work should definitely give this a go. This is a great novel for the children's/young adult market. ![]() The idea that Alcatraz is actually the author and Brandon Sanderson only a pseudonym gives another level to the book and provides plenty of entertainment as the author mocks his own art form. In this way it is very different from much of Sanderson's other work (almost as if it is a different author) despite some similar themes and content. The highlight of this book, however, is the first person perspective and writing style. Many of these concepts are very intriguing and need developing further. ![]() There is a lot of establishing ideas which will no doubt be fleshed out in the several sequels. ![]() He is an orphan in our world who discovers he is the last in the family line of Smedry, a leading magical family in the battle against librarian oppression in this mysterious hidden world.Ī lot of this magical world and its inhabitants are left half explained as it is gradually revealed through the cynical eyes of Alcatraz. The story is told from the perspective of the main protagonist, the eponymous Alcatraz. It is based around the concept that evil librarians rule the world behind the scenes and suppress the peoples of it with lies, manipulation and sometimes force. It is a story concerned with our world not being as we think we know it. A very well written and enjoyable children's book with a wry, satirical sense of humour that will simultaneously entertain adults as well as amuse children. ![]() Aza turtles all the way down5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Anyone using the information provided by Kidadl does so at their own risk and we can not accept liability if things go wrong. That major issue aside, I did like the story and the characters. I just felt the author was thisclose to mentioning that she felt her slanty eyes. ![]() She doesn't have a mirror, so she feels her face and guesses that she is Asian. In an even worse example, when the main characters take a magic candy that is supposed to temporarily change their ethnicity as a way to disguise them, one girl becomes Chinese. From the start he unnecessarily describes non-white characters by their race. However, one thing will keep me from being able to recommend this title to others: the author's use of race. I absolutely loved the colorful, glittery cover, and the premise seemed like such fun. I wanted to love this book from the very beginning. ![]() Nothing ever happens by sue brown5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Then a new couple moves in down the street, and Andrew finds himself falling for Nathan in a big way. Digging a little deeper I came across an excellent article about the book in Publishers Weekly. I also know we have very few platforms remaining who would review this title. (to be plain Simon and Schuster is not an advertiser). I also realize publishers spend less on promotion and advertising and that is also part of the problem. But I'm on Twitter and Facebook every day and did not see anything about this book. ![]() I also know many of those people went to social media. Sure a few years ago there was more discussion about books here on. Now her latest book A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story has been out for over a month and I had no clue. When a writer of Souljah's notoriety publishes the sequel to a wildly popular book (1,436,559 copies in print) I want to be able to be the first to let people know. ![]() It is a problem because I actively look for books by Black writers that I think will appeal to or at least interest readers. In 2013 there was zero buzz at least from my perspective. Just a few years ago prior to the publication of, Midnight, Souljah's 2nd novel, a few years after the Coldest Winter Ever, there was much more anticipation, more buzz. ![]() I discovered this book from the Jan/Feb 2013 bestsellers list I just published.
